As I'm not entirely sure this game ever came with a box, or manual for that matter, I thought you may enjoy seeing the opening and title screens.

This hacked edition of Super Mario Bros. is really a combination of various aspects of the other games: You get Super Mario World/All Stars-style graphics with Super Mario 2 gameplay(you pitch boxes to kill enemies, there is no more stomping them, in fact, it hurts you now). Though I'm sure there's some underlying story here...I couldn't find one...and really, it doesn't matter...just go throw some crates!

What's it all about?
Like the game is was based on, this is a sidescrolling adventure-style game. You try to make your way through the levels while picking up and pitching boxes(think NES's Chip and Dale, by Capcom) at enemies that get in your way. Most of the enemies and levels are brand new, and those that have been taken from the original SMB All Star SNES cart, have been redrawn and animated giving them all a fresh, new look. On top of that, you can even play along with a buddy, simultaneously...

Graphics - Well, mostly based off the character models from World/All Stars, it's very cartoony and quite pretty. The new levels are just gorgeous, and the new enemies look pretty good as well. The bosses, in general, new or old, are HUGE and look damn good.
Sound - The first few levels of hearing the Mario theme going through the Genesis sound chip is pretty hip, but after a while it really grates on your nerves. Thank God, once you get past the Mario levels, the music is completely new, and not at all too bad. Sound effects are pretty crappy, on the other hand...
Control - Loose, and that's good thing for this game. Mario can be moved anywhere, anytime and quickly.
AI - Some enemies are just there for you to dodge, others will hurt you if you walk into their path, later on in the game, they will actually hunt you down. It's a nice mix.
Replay value - If the game just didn't freeze up so much or if it had any sort of save or password feature, I would say it's very high...but as it doesn't, having it freeze 3 or 4 worlds in will have you wanting to chunk it after a while. A real shame...but what do you expect from a hacked cart?
Tips for better gaming experiences:
ALWAYS carry a box with you! It doesn't slow you down any, nor affect your jumping and you'll need it more times than not. Other than your fireballs, the boxes are all you have to attack with...and with their, sometimes, limited supply you'll find yourself dodging enemies without one, praying you can get to the end of the level.

My rating: 85(out of 100) - A great amateur-programmed game! Why they felt they had to use Mario to get it seen, I don't know, this one could easily have used an original character, ditched the Mario levels and been ok. It only looses points for some sloppy programming, at times, and the cart's constant freeze-ups.

Cat's review:
Not a bad hack, but not really a good game. It's pretty much what you'd expect: A lot of glitches, bugs and half-assed programming. It's not all that and a bag of kitty treats, trust me...ignore Bel.
As a lot of people have never, or will never get a chance to see the game I thought I'd take a few more shots to look over: Waterfalls/Look familiar?/Good'ole underworld/Weird, Pig Boss/Bowser fight/More jungle

The two player game is pretty hip. You and a buddy can go through the worlds double teaming the baddies.
The bored monkey will occasionally throw stuff at you, until then, he usually looks like me at work: Bored off his ass.
Mario about to to skewered by rat-guy...
In the house of Bowser...
Interesting Tidbits:
Another Nintendo star got the hacked cart treatment as well: Super Donkey Kong 99 is a hacked version of the SNES's Donkey Kong Country...and it's *really* bad. Be sure to check out SegaClone for more info on hacked Genesis/Mega Drive carts.
