The first of the comic book-based games on the Genesis, and still one of the absolute best. Playing Spider-Man, you fight various super-powered criminals while fending off the police, gangsters and others after being framed by the Kingpin. An early gem from way back, this is still one of the *best* titles available for the Genesis.

What's it all about?
It's a sidescrolling action game, with a lot of web-slinging. Playing as Spider-Man, you'll make your way through levels either on foot, on web, or on the walls in an attempt to take down one of the various supervillians as you get closer to the bomb that's threatening the city. With the whole city against Spider-Man, there's more than enough people to beat on and you can adequately do so with a variety of punches, kicks and swinging attacks. Along the way, you can actually take photographs of the action, and sell them to the Daily Bugle to obtain cash to make more web fluid. It's kinda gimmicky, but some of the shots you can take are pretty amusing...

Graphics - Overall, pretty good, but there are some issues with the coloring on some of the characters, and especially the red part of Spidey's suit. The color seems to actually be outside of the character's sprite, like it's bleeding out, but it's not. It's just odd...but you get used to it. The backgrounds, on the other hand, look great and have some slick parallax scrolling that creates a really nice feeling of depth in the levels.
Sound - A really nice, ambient soundtrack goes along with your swinging. Sound effects are about average, nothing too memorable, but the the web shots sound pretty good, and what you'd expect them to sound like after reading the comics.
Control - Smooth. Being able to not only control your jump, but web swing and stick to walls at any time makes getting around any level a snap.
AI - Not too smart, but at least they're not cheap. Enemies will basically attack when they see you, and bosses will continuously pummel you until they are dead...what you'd expect right?
Replay value - High! With lots of secret power-ups hidden around the levels, the opportunity to take new and interesting snap shots of enemies and just to swing around town, you'll be playing this one a whole lot!
Tips for better gaming experiences:
When fighting Kingpin, no matter what you do, no matter how much web it takes or how many hits you take, be *sure* to keep Mary Jane alive. If she dies, the game is over...no continuing, no starting back at the beginning of the level, start-over-from-the-beginning-game-over.

My rating: 96(out of 100) - An old school favorite, and still rockin' after all these years. The gameplay, the style and overall execution of this one is just amazingly good.
Game Informer gave it: 8(out of 10)
GamePro gave it: 5.0(graphics), 5.0(sound), 5.0(gameplay), 5.0(funfactor), 5.0(challenge)(out of 5)

Cat's review:
I normally don't much care for spiders(in fact, I usually eat them), but this one, I love. A great game...and I won't eat it.

Nothing like the sewers on a Saturday night...
Crate hopping fun!
Swinging a little low this evening.
The Spidey Classic: The upside down idle animation pose...
Spider-CD:
A Sega CD version was also made based off this game. A little different, it's still Spidey...and still good.
